I wrote “Close” from a place of desperation which was seeking more than what I currently had.
I am a christian, and have been told about how the blood of Jesus solved everything over 2000 years ago. The song is me simply seeking to get closer to that blood. In my writing process , I pictured how he may have died on the cross and the step by step process of that whole scene in parallel to my present struggles.
My verses convey this imagery of his suffering, and how I was on his mind, and he did it to get close to me, but now I also want to get close to him but I may not be able to sacrifice myself as he did to be close to me.
In a sense, I also tell myself off in the song, because I feel bad that I say I want to be close to him, but really and truly, I don’t feel like I am.
